Picture This Scenario

The Saturday after you graduate from High School, your parents are hosting a BBQ to celebrate for you and for your family members. Your cousins, grandparents, aunts, and uncles are all coming. (Realistically speaking, they wouldn't. Most of them live on a different continent, and the ones who don't live on a different continent live on the other side of this one, actively avoiding my family because of some beef that existed between my yeye and them)

20 people are expected in total. Your parents come up with the following menu:

  • 8 pounds of hamburger
  • 30 hotdogs
  • 5 pounds of potato salad
  • 30 ears of corn on the cob
  • 6 bags of potato chips
  • 4 cases of water

You ask your parents if you can invite some of your closest friends, and they of course say it's OK—wait wurt... O.o Uh anyways?? They say it's okay. Through the power of Twitter Discord and Facebook Fandom (my mom FREAKED when she found out that I was hanging out on a children's book website why would she be okay with me inviting internet friends to my house) 56 of your closest friends tell you that they will definitely be there. Your parents say that you can all come, but on one condition. You have to go shopping for the food that will feed your friends.

Using the information above, answer the following:

1) How many pounds of hamburgers will you buy? How many hotdogs? How many pounds of potato salad? How many ears of corn on the cob? How many bags of potato chips? How many cases of water?

2) What will the supply of food cost in total?

pstpstpst guys let's buy fruit and bubble tea and cheesecake and goldfish crackers and weetabix and orange chicken and cotton candy (:< Why limit ourselves to a predetermined menu?? My parents never capped the amount of money they said I could spend in this hypothetical situation, so that must mean that i have an infinite budget >>:D and i will USE that infinite budget for my own nefarious purposes

Answering Question One B)

1) How many pounds of hamburgers will you buy? How many hotdogs? How many pounds of potato salad? How many ears of corn on the cob? How many bags of potato chips? How many cases of water?

Credit for this chart-format goes to Himmalerin!
Pounds of Hamburger 8 pounds/20 people = X pounds/56 people 448 pounds/20 people = 20x pounds/20 people X would therefore equal 22.4
Hotdogs 30 hotdogs/20 people = X hotdogs/56 people 1680 hotdogs/20 people = 20x hotdogs/20 people X would therefore equal 84
Potato Salad 5 pounds/20 people = X pounds/56 people 280 pounds/20 people = 20x pounds/20 people X would therefore equal 14
Ears of Corn 30 ears/20 people = X ears/56 people 1680 ears/20 people = 20x ears/20 people X would therefore equal 84
Potato Chips 6 bags/20 people = X bags/56 people 336 bags/20 people = 20x bags/20 people X would therefore equal 16.8
Cases of Water 4 cases/20 people = X cases/56 people 224 cases/20 people = 20x cases/20 people X would therefore equal 11.2

For the 56 friends that I invited, I'd have to buy:

  • 22.4 pounds of hamburger
  • 84 hotdogs
  • 14 pounds of potato salad
  • 84 ears of corn on the cob
  • 16.8 bags of potato chips
  • 11.2 cases of water

In a different scenario I would be raiding the stores with friends and possibly committing accidental arson, since that appears to be a common theme with us. I would also be a tree.

Why a tree is friends with a group of certified arsonists is beyond my understanding, but there you have it.

Credit to my friends for telling me what their favorite foods are! I will remember this information c:<

All photos and gifs were found on free-to-use websites, like Unsplash and Giphy! All prices of the food products were taken from Amazon's, Walmart's, or Costco's websites. Coding was done by me (your student) and learned with help from Himmalerin's many coding guides! I also included altered versions of Himmalerin's free-format infobox in both this project and the second one!
