Prologue
Heads-up, this isn't a fanfic! I just called the headers chapters because this kid like books and reading yknow
Anyhoo, Bookworm is a HiveWing dragonet and a consumer of literature, hence their name. A bookworm is also any of the various insect species that literally consumes books. Rest assured, Bookworm does not actually eat books. ordotheywiggleseyebrowsominously
Chapter: Introduction, or "Call me Bookworm"
"It is a truth universally acknowledged that an illiterate dragonet in possession of a book must be in want of a story."
Bookworm was, in the words of their more gracious teachers, a problematic student.
Admittedly, it was not a difficult feat to be labelled a problematic student in Mantis Hive, where intelligence and learning were so often valued above anything and everything else. Even the slightest resistance exhibited towards attending school or completing a homework assignment was enough to label a student as problematic, and the highly competitive environment was enough to make even the most resilient of dragons stressed.
So Bookworm became known as the "problematic student" because of how clearly they disliked school. They did not like the building, or the dragons there, or the work that was given to them, or the food; and they most DEFINITELY did not like using the disgusting lavatory. They did not like having to announce to the class their desire to use the lavatory, or having to gain permission from an irascible adult before they could use it.
How strange it is that
"It was a pleasure to read."
Chapter: Beginning, or "In a house in the Mantis Hive there lived a dragonet"
"Mr. and Mrs. Bookworm, of Jewel and Mantis Hive, were proud to say that they were very snazzy, thank you very much"
"The sun had not yet risen."
"All dragonets, except one, grow up."
"How does one describe Bookworm? Various psychiatrists have tried and failed."
"There was no possibility of taking a flight that day."
"It was love at first sight."
"My suffering left me sad and gloomy."
"There was a hand in the darkness, and it held a book."
Chapter: Middle, or "Bookworm had two problems: the moon and their eyesight."
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way – in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only."
Chapter: End, or "All this happened, more or less"
"All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."
"In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since. Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, he told me, just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had."
"In the land of Pantala, where such things as insect-dragons and communication with plants really exist, it is quite a misfortune to be born a SilkWing. Everyone knows you are the one who will fail first, and worst, if the three of you set out to seek your fortunes."
