"Vinca" refers to a genus of flowering plants. The name is thought to be derived from the Latin word "vincire," which means "to bind." Among it's common names are "periwinkle," "sorcerer's violet," and "fairy's paintbrush."

This is a species of evergreen perennial native to the western Mediterranean, but it's been classified as an invasive species in the United States, New Zealand, and Australia. In those countries, vinca compete with the native flora for growing space.

In floriography, Vinca flowers are often associated with serenity, nostalgia, and purity. Heavily contrasting with this is how these plants can also be used as symbols of death.
