"Vinca" refers to a genus of flowering plants. The name is thought to be derived from the Latin word "vincire," which means "to bind." Among it's common names are "periwinkle," "sorcerer's violet," and "fairy's paintbrush."
This is a species of evergreen perennial native to the western Mediterranean, but it's been classified as an invasive species in the United States, New Zealand, and Australia. In those countries, vinca compete with the native flora for growing space.
In floriography, Vinca flowers are often used to represent serenity, nostalgia, and purity. They can be symbolic of friendship, and of protection. Travellers would carry vinca with them in the hopes of warding off danger, and the plants were once woven into wreaths that would then be hung upon the door to protect those within a household.
Heavily contrasting with the above is the fact that Vinca is a flower associated with death. While a wreath of it on the door was meant to protect the household, similar wreaths would be crafted for children's funerals. The hardiness of Vinca made it so that it could thrive in soil that other plants were unable to; thus, it would often be seen sprouting from the ground of graveyards.
