she / herOthers often compliment Moondusk for being pretty; anyone else may think she just looks odd. Regardless of what they say, she definitely doesn't look like your average NightWing.
The greater of Dusky's scales are greyish-blue—darker on top and lighter on the bottom, which wouldn't be considered odd—fading into white at the end of her tail and teal on her talons. The white scales come from her IceWing heritage on her mother's side.
Bright pink horns stick out atop her head; the spines along her back are blue and fade into white, as the scales on her tail. The inside of her wings are a similar shade of pink to that of her horns, decorated with many clustered star scales, forming a hexagonal shape in the middle of one of her wings. Moondusk's underscales are a neutral purple color.
Moondusk's talons are semi-dark teal which fade back to blue up on her legs. She can often be seen with jewelry, such as bracelets, necklaces, and fun earrings. The short dragon wears round-framed glasses to aid her sight, and if one looks closely they can tell that she has blue-grey eyes (however sometimes they appear to be more green depending on the lighting/her environment).
One disadvantage Moondusk's appearance gives her is that it's hard to hide and blend into the shadows like other NightWings—namely the unusual colors. She also stands out in crowds, which she is not fond of, as she doesn't enjoy bringing attention to herself. However, she's slowly learning to accept her appearance and love herself for who she is.
MODERN / ANTHRO
| CLOTHING & ACCESSORIES
Moondusk's style can be described as skater grunge―more often than not, she can be found wearing flannel over band shirts, baggy jeans, hoodies, and/or sweatpants. Her go-to accessories include beanies, bracelets, and earrings. She always has on black Converse and tends to focus her outfits around dark/neutral colors or shades of blue or pink so they don't clash with her scales. And, or course, she can't forget her glasses.
| INVENTORY
Dusky cannot be seen anywhere without her headphones. It's as if she's in a constant state of music; if she doesn't have them over her head, they're around her neck and she's making up melodies in her head.
Additionally, she brings her trumpet with her everywhere. It's genuinely odd if Dusky goes a day without practicing. According to her, "Concert band is just prep for marching season!" So she never takes a break. If for some reason Dusky doesn't have her trumpet, it's because she's playing euphonium instead.
Further, Moondusk carries a small sketchbook in her pocket for when she gets inspiration to draw or write. She also has a pink water bottle which is adorned with way too many stickers. "Hydrate or diedrate!"
| MARCHING BAND UNIFORM
The Jade Mountain Marching Serpents' uniforms are primarily white; white overalls, white jacket, white shako. There is a large, green, downturned triangle shape on the front of the jacket which covers the chest. In the center of the triangle is a simple bronze dragon, not appearing to be part of any particular tribe. This same design is also on the shako.
Moondusk wears a cape with her uniform; it is white and fades to green at the bottom. This is because she is the Assistant Trumpet Section Leader. Regular members have pure white capes. Drum majors' are fully green.

| MUSICIANSHIP
Moondusk comes from a family of musicians, so she has been exposed to music since the moment she hatched. The first instrument she learned how to play was trumpet, which she has gotten rather good at. Nowadays she has also taken up euphonium; Dusky is able to play pretty much any brass instrument as long as it isn't in the trombone family (she doesn't understand slide positions). Additionally, she enjoys marching and is very good at staying in time and keeping her visuals sharp.

Moondusk's parents met through music. Her father, Starchaser, was a choir singer and double bass player, while her mother, Twinkle, played snare drum in the Marching Corps of Possibility. The first time they ever saw each other was during a jazz concert. Starchaser was playing onstage with his giant instrument. Twinkle noticed his skill and went up to compliment his playing after the gig.
They kept talking after that.
Over the course of two years, Twinkle and Starchaser got married, moved to the Lost City of Night, and had a daughter―Moondusk. The moons were high on the night of Moondusk's hatching, with one being full and the other two waxing. Her egg glowed silver in the pale moonlight. As the innocent little Dusky poked her head out from the shell, her parents beamed with pride. Starting from that moment on, Twinkle and Starchaser made every effort they could to expose their tiny daughter to the world of music.
Neither Moondusk nor her father knew how sick Twinkle was.
It wasn't till she started coughing up blood that she told her husband. "I didn't want you to worry," Twinkle had said. "Because our life is perfect."
Upon visiting a doctor, Twinkle was diagnosed with cancer. She had never done anything unhealthy in order to develop it, she was just unlucky. After three months, she lost the battle. Just like that, a blazing candle snuffed out. And the smoke would never clear. The smoke loomed over the lives of Moondusk and Starchaser like a shadow creature with its claws over their hearts, but never striking them down. Rather, it just crept into the crevasses of their minds, whispering words that were incoherent yet bitter as frostbite. Smoke, shadow, frost, mind. Gone.
The music stopped after that. Starchaser's double bass sat in the corner of the attic, collecting dust. Spiders wove webs in its hollow wooden interior. Sometimes a curious Moondusk would poke her eye through to watch them in the midst of their creation. She would not go downstairs because it was never dry. The stone-cold floor was eternally soaked with the tears of her father.
That was when Holly came. She was Moondusk's grandmother―an elegant IceWing who appeared as delicate as poinsettia. But her determination was ironclad. She discovered tiny Dusky sleeping in the attic, curled up next to her father's dejected double bass. Holly's heart was filled with pity. She knew it would be cruel to let her granddaughter live like this. So, she became her parental figure while Starchaser went to the mental hospital.
It was no question that Starchaser was severely depressed after the passing of his wife. Dusky hardly saw him for almost a year while he was getting better.
Additionally, Moondusk was starting school. The small dragonet's excitement was immeasurable. I can't wait to make so many friends! she would think, hanging drawings of herself and imaginary dragons on the wall. I'll have a hundred!
Truthfully, she did not fit in so well. On her first day at Clearsight Private Academy, Dusky tried to talk to everyone. She really did want a hundred friends. She showed them her drawings, and she showed them how to sing and dance! But most everyone ignored her. The teacher didn't even see her while taking role! Moondusk felt like she was in the attic again. And it only got worse from there. During recess, she tried to join a ball game, but the other dragonets yelled at her. Everyone already knew each other and they did not care to associate with an outsider. Moondusk went home that day in tears.
"They don't want to be friends with you because you're not normal, Moondusk," Holly told her. "You have to act civilized so you'll fit in with everyone else."
Holly's response only upset Dusky more. What was "normal"? If her grandmother meant that the other dragonets in her class were normal, she didn't want to be like them because they were mean! Thus, Moondusk's descent into lunacy had begun. She tried to get attention at any change she could get, stealing credit, interrupting, taking the spotlight. But the spotlight burned crimson and her classmates saw red. Almost every day Dusky would come home with bruises and cuts from getting into fights. Everyone in the school knew who she was now, but not for the right reasons. "She's that weirdo who always draws comics in class and thinks all of Pyrrhia revolves around her," they'd say.
"Pinky," "white-tail," "Loonydusk." There was name-calling. It was more than just disliking Moondusk. They thought she was nasty. Perhaps they were right. The dragonets' hatred for Dusky as an individual manifested into finding her ugly on the outside, too. But was Dusky really the villain? It was true that she was a menace in class. But the source of her behavior was because of the bullying. And the bullying was because of her oddness. Her oddness was because of her early dragonethood isolation.
Could a dragonet so naïve and sheltered truly be the villain if the source of her attention-seeking was because she never got attention from her father? Is it odd for her not to understand social cues and manners because she had never been taught? Is it strange in any world for a dragonet not to have friends if she never learned to make them?
Moondusk could not stand to look into the mirror for a long time. The smoke had returned, or perhaps it had never gone away. But now it took on a new form. The insults and name-calling stuck to every part of her mind like soot in a chimney. What is the point of life if no one lets you live it?, she would wonder. I should just fade away like the night, and maybe the sun will rise when I'm gone...
She started to eat very unhealthily as a way to cope with her emotional pain. WIP

| LUNAWING
Lunawing was Moondusk's next-door neighbor while she lived with her grandmother. Dusky was very young at the time, so she does not remember Luna very well. Regardless, the vague memories she has of her are fond.
| NIGHTWATCHER
Moondusk remembers meeting the small, purple dragonet in the outskirts of the Night Kingdom while visiting family. That was the only time the pair had ever met, but they got along and discussed their lives while running along the cool, windy beach. Dusky wonders from time to time where Nightwatcher is now.
| SCROLLREADER
Dusky used to be good friends with the Night-Rain-Sky tribrid, as they both shared a passion for writing and oddities. However, the two have only contacted a few times since Scroll moved away. Moondusk misses her deeply.
- Fanfictions she's featured in: Storm Coming by LimeyTheRainwing (prophet), Rivers and Shadows by DarkyTheDRagon53 (student), and Your Doom by ChocolateTheSweetwing (background character).
- Her parents named her after Moonwatcher because they found her story to be inspiring
- Additionally, her full name (Moondusk Borealis Gleamingstone) follows Helsingvania's name system.
- There is a hidden easter egg in her design, which is an EXO logo on her wing.
- This is because I went through a K-pop phase.

Moondusk's music taste consists of pop punk, ska, thrash metal, post-grunge, progressive rock, classic rock, heavy metal, golden era emo, surf rock, and more―though she's really not picky as long as it's anything rock or rock-influenced. She tends to listen to more upbeat songs on this spectrum. Her (work-in-progress) playlist can be found here.
